UniLAD – Why women aren’t laughing

‘Thou shall turn directly to page 3 when reading the Sun’

‘If a girl says she is bi-sexual, thou must assume that she is up for a threesome’

‘Thou shall remember that beauty is just a light switch away.’

Not quite the commandments you remember being taught in R.E? No, me either. The ‘lad bible’ seems to have been placed firmly at the epi-centre of modern-day uni culture- it’s influence being notably evident not only in clubs and pubs, but also everyday-life. Now I’m not saying that every male in the 18-20 something category is a religious follower of ‘the lad-bible’ culture, and yes, perhaps it is just a bit of fun that bonds today’s young males- but what I am saying is that it is not just a bit of fun when it affects the lives the young women striving to be taken seriously in this world.

This misogynist uni-lad culture seems to be increasing constantly, just ask any girl who has had the pleasure of entering a night club and being groped by men who, after one too many, think that sexual assault is just the ‘norm’- because let’s face it, that’s what we’re dealing with. Some people might well be thinking that ‘assault’ is too strong a term for what many see as a bit of ‘harmless fun’, but a recent article on ‘surprise rape’ in popular magazine ‘uni-lad’ seems to give us a clearer idea. The article suggested that if the girl you’ve taken out for a drink refuses to jump into bed with you, then don’t worry because ‘85% of rape cases go unreported and that seems to be fairly good odds.’

Okay so it’s also probably fair to say that these are fairly ‘rare’ cases- surely not every male attending university in the twenty first century is planning a sinister attack, however, what we can say for sure is that media and social networking certainly make it seem okay. For instance, the already mentioned website ‘uni-lad’ isn’t by any means a small unheard of site- it’s a hugely visited space with thousands of male followers, in other words it’s going to influence our society in one way or another. I therefore decided to see what all the fuss is about. And if this is really what all the fuss is about then I’m truly ashamed of what our modern-day uni-culture has become.

‘You’ll need lots of practice…bearing this in mind when you’re next out on the lash…by the time you take home a solid 7/10 you want to be ready to impress, so keep your standards low during training.’

‘Skills of a lad include: Shagging any bird with a pulse.’

‘She’s likely to be insecure, so she’ll really appreciate your attention enough that you’ll get a blow-job. And chubby insecure girls are REALLY good at blow-jobs…all of them have probably had a bit of self-induced vom, so their gag relfex is probably shot.’

Brilliant. I was clearly mistaken when thinking that University was related to education; a place where males and females gain a degree to better their lives- I now see it’s more of an opportinuty to increase the notches on one’s bedpost. However, for anyone who at this point is as concerned as I am, don’t panic- not all is lost; ‘uni-lad’ have managed to right their wrongs and play down their so-called ‘articles’ with a mind-easing statement:

‘Students love articles that don’t take them too seriously. This site isn’t out to offend, it’s to give them a break from the heavy stories in the mainstream news and to have a laugh.’- Alex, Editor

Well Alex, im not laughing.
